Robert S. Otis, Will

Robert S. Otis was born Friday, January 22, 1836 in Maromas, Middletown, CT. He was the son of Erastus Selden Otis and Elizabeth Mary Young Otis. He was the older brother (by 11 years) of Daniel H. Otis. 

Robert died on Monday, May 21, 1894; age 58 in Middletown, CT. His cause of death was from "apoplexy paralysis,” which is a stroke.

The following is the will of Robert S. Otis. In case it is difficult to read, I transcribed the information below, word-for-word.




Will of Robert S. Otis

I, Robert S. Otis of the town of Middletown, in the County of Middlesex, and State of Connecticut being of a sound disposing mind and memory, do make this my last will and Testament as follows:

First: I give devise and bequeath to my wife Charlotte Elizabeth Otis the use and improvement of all my property both real and personal during her life.

Second: I give devise and bequeath after the death of my wife, the use and improvement of all my property both real and personal to my children, Mary E. Risk, Sidney B. Otis, and Charlotte Agnes Otis during their lives and at the death of any one of them, then the one third of which he or she has had the use, shall vest absolutely in his or her children and in case any one of my said children die leaving no immediate descendants then the one third which he or she has had the use of shall be equally divided among the children of my surviving children, and in case two of my children shall die leaving no immediate descendants then the remainder shall vest in the children of the survivor and in case all of my children die leaving no immediate descendants, then I give devise and bequeath the use and improvement of all of my property both real and personal after the use vested in my said children has terminated—to George Otis my brother and at the death of the said George Otis, I give devise and bequeath the remainder to Frank Otis, son of my said brother George to have and to hold to him and his heirs absolutely forever.

Lastly: I nominate and appoint my said wife Charlotte Elizabeth Otis Executrix of this my Last Will and Testament, and order and direct her to pay all my joint debts and funeral charges and I further direct that only nominal bonds be required of her.

In witness thereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal at Middletown this 8th day of April as 1889
