Partridge berry (Mitchella repens) growing wild over the grave of Gustelle Young Chapman |
I found it highly symbolic and almost serendipitous that the plant “partridge berry” (Mitchella repens) would be growing wild all over Gustelle Chapman’s grave, and her grave alone! As an herbalist, I am very familiar with this plant. Partridge berry is a creeping, ground-hugging, herbaceous plant, native to North America. Partridge berry is a uterine tonic par-excellence and a wonderful strengthener of that female muscle we call the uterus. Gustelle died of "uterine cancer," so the fact that this uterine-loving plant would be growing all over her grave is beautiful and healing. I hope that is a sign that she is healed, whole, and happy, wherever she is.

Henry Rawson was the husband of Laura L. Young (the youngest child of Jeremiah B. Young and Josephine Tryon). Henry's name, birth year, and death year may be carved on the family's central pillar, however, he has no grave-marker like the rest of the family does. So, I cannot confirm if he is actually buried there. The remains of Laura L. Young are not at her family's plot, as her name is not engraved there, and there is no grave-marker for her there either. Though, it certainly seems like that side of the family plot was meant for Henry Rawson and his wife, Laura Young.
Since I cannot locate the final resting place of Laura L. Young Rawson, daughter of Jeremiah B. Young, I will give her an epitaph here:

Henry R. Young was a Civil War Veteran! 22 year-old Henry R. Young enlisted as "Sergeant" in Company H, 21st Connecticut Infantry on August 6, 1862. He Mustered in as “Second Sergeant” on September 5, 1862, and was appointed “Sergeant Major” on October 12, 1862. Henry was disabled from exposure while on picket duty at Fredericksburg and sent to Eckington Hospital in Washington D.C. on February, 1863. Then on December 12, 1863, he was transferred to the Veteran Reserve Corps. He mustered out on August 11, 1865. Henry Young was Commander of the Mansfield Post, No. 53, G.A. R. (Middletown).
The grave of Henry R. Young gives absolutely no indication that he was a Civil War Veteran! I find this interesting since Henry was very proud of his service. Myself and my husband have placed a G.A.R marker and flag to honor Henry's service.

There is no date of death engraved into Bertha's side of the gravestone. It's just blank. Whoever oversaw Bertha's burial arrangements, never arranged to have her date of death engraved into her gravestone. I have seen this quite often, and there could be a myriad of reasons why a loved one, or next-of-kin, didn’t follow through.

Above, is a picture of the Egbert J. Young family plot, within the red line. Egbert and his wife, Isabella, are the two graves on the right, within the red line. The four graves on the left, within the red line, are (from left to right) their son Hervey Robert Young, his wife Gertrude, their son Robert W. Young, and Robert's wife, Eva.
Notice that the Egbert J. Young family plot has no central grave-marker, the way the plots of other families do. The central grave-marker is usually inscribed with the family surname and various dates, around which all the respective family members are buried. Egbert's family doesn't have a central grave-marker. That is why their family plot seems particularly barren—an open patch of grass where the family grave-marker should be.
Egbert Johnson Young was the son of Robert I. Young and Laura A. Johnson, the nephew of Elizabeth M. Young Otis, and the first cousin of Daniel H. Otis.

Another gravestone with no date of death inscribed on it! I have yet to discover Isabella's date of death. I can't even send away for her death certificate if I don't know what year she died. It would be like looking for a "needle in a haystack," and trust me, and trust me, I don't think the folks in the department that house the vital statistic records are up for that challenge! It seems liken nobody knew when she was dead or alive! Also, I'm not sure if the spelling of her name on her gravestone is a typo, or if that's the actual way she spelled her name. Any document I came across for her, has always spelled the name as: "Isabella."
Egbert Young died very tragically, and the local newspapers ran the story and a death announcement for him. The May 20, 1909 Meriden newspaper “The Journal,” said he was a widower, meaning his wife was already dead when he died. However, the May 20, 1909 Middletown newspaper, “The Penny Press,” said he left behind a widow, meaning his wife was still alive when he died!
His wife can’t be BOTH dead and alive! Who knows, maybe she’s like Schrödinger's cat, simultaneously alive and dead! After the crazy stuff I’ve seen in genealogical research, anything is possible.

The Martin D. Young Family Plot at Wilcox Cemetery, East Berlin, CT
The unmarked graves of Martin D. Young, his wife Emma, and son Clifford. Wilcox Cemetery, Easter Berlin, CT |
Notice the sunken graves in the above picture. I was told by the caretaker of Wilcox Cemetery that this is because the caskets have collapsed.
The following paragraphs are taken from my page "Young Family Genealogy," under Martin Dana Young's subheading. So, if you've already read that, this portion is a rehash.
For the longest time, I could not locate the final resting place for either Martin or his wife, Emma. It wasn't until I searched the Middletown Vital Statistics for his cause of death that I came across a lead as to where he may be buried. The Vitals only listed the town (not the cemetery) he was buried in. All it said was "East Berlin, CT."
East Berlin is not a big town and they only have one cemetery, which is Wilcox Cemetery. Myself, my husband, and our son combed the entire cemetery for Martin and his family with absolutely no luck. We wondered if this was another case of "buried, but no grave-marker." As this was the exact situation we found ourselves in while trying to locate Martin's uncle: William L. Young, and his family (see the "William L. Young Family Plot" below). William, his wife, and his unmarried son were all buried in a plot without markers.
My husband made a phone call and got in touch with the caretaker of Wilcox Cemetery. The caretaker was extremely kind and helpful. According to his records, not only was Martin buried there, but his wife Emma, and son Clifford were too! The caretaker explained to my husband where their plot was located. We told him that we'd be going out soon to take another look.
We wondered how we could have overlooked them, as the cemetery was not very large. Then we wondered if it was possible that the entire family was buried without markers, exactly the same way William L. Young and his family were. We dismissed that idea, and thought for sure we overlooked them, because what were the chances of yet more Young family members being buried without grave-markers?
Unexpectedly, we got a phone call back from the caretaker, who, in his kindness, took it upon himself to physically go out to the cemetery to see the graves. Sure enough, he said there were no grave-markers for Martin and his family, and that's why we "overlooked" them!
My husband and I think it's already strange enough that yet another set of Young family members have no grave-markers, but it's even MORE strange that BOTH sets of Young family members who are without grave-markers, consist of a father, a mother, and an unmarried son!
William L. Young, his wife Esther, and their unmarried son, Earl were all buried in a plot at Pine Grove Cemetery with no grave-markers (again, see the "William L. Young Family Plot" subheading below), and now Martin Dana Young, his wife Emma, and their unmarried son, Clifford, are also buried in a plot with no grave-markers! I wonder how common this was and if we are going to find a third set of Young peeps without grave-markers! Although, I have accounted for all of the key members of the Young family, I still haven't been able to locate Lizzie Hannah Young (daughter of Alonzo Dana Young), and her husband Henry Kriesing.
Nonetheless, we are going to place some really nice temporary grave-markers down for the Martin Young family until something more permanent can hopefully be gotten. I'm just happy we located this family!
Update! We were able to place some temporary markers for Martin and his family. We met the caretaker of Wilcox Cemetery out at the Young graves, and he marked off the family's plot for us. He is a former Vietnam Vet (Army), and my Dad is a former Vietnam Vet (Marines), so we got to talking with him. My husband and I could have listened to his stories all day. He lost his left leg in the war, as well as the use of his left arm. I shared Daniel's story with him, and thought to myself how each soldier lost a leg in a war, and yet because of the miracle of modern trauma care, one soldier lived, and the other soldier died—each separated by a hundred years or so. After we left the cemetery, that thought stayed with me a while.
I created some bundles of fresh-harvested evergreens, holly and ivy, and bound in red ribbon, to leave at their graves.
Martin Dana Young was the son of Robert I. Young and Laura A. Johnson, the nephew of Elizabeth M. Young Otis, and the first cousin of Daniel H. Otis.

William L. Young Family Plot at Pine Grove Cemetery, Middletown, CT
In the background of the above picture, to the left, is the central pillar for the Robert I. Young family plot. Robert I. Young was the older brother of William L. Young. Everyone buried in the Robert Young plot has their own grave-marker. In the left foreground of the picture is the Emilie E. Young-Camp family plot, which includes her husband Charles Coe Camp and their children. Everyone here also has their own grave-markers. Emilie was the daughter of William L. Young.
Within the red lines (above pic) are the burial plot for William L. Young, his wife Esther, and their son Earl. Oddly enough, they have no central pillar, no headstones, no grave-markers....nothing. One could walk over that little patch of green land and not ever know that three individuals were buried beneath!
Why didn't anyone provide this family with grave-markers?
It certainly couldn't have been for lack of funds! William was not a pauper. At one time, he was a land-holder and home-owner in the Maromas section of Middletown. Also, he and his son-in-law, Charles Camp, ran a grocery business together for nine years (Young & Camp Grocers). William's wife, Esther, died seven years before he did, so why didn't he provide a grave-marker for her? When William died, why didn't his surviving adult children, Emilie and Earl, provide a grave-marker for him? When Earl died, why didn't his surviving kin (who would be Emilie's son, C. Curtis Camp) provide a grave-marker for him? Why are their grave-markers for Emilie and her family, but not for her parents and brother, Earl?
It's obvious, the family wanted to be buried near each other, as Emilie is buried in the adjoining plot to her parents, and the paperwork that the lead caretaker at Pine Grove Cemetery shared with me, shows that William Young and Charles Camp share the plot, so it was probably purchased jointly.
Another thing: the land beneath where William, Esther, and Earl are buried, has actually sunken in. In person, one can see with their own eyes that the land at that spot has a noticeable dip in it, while the land at all the other graves in the area is nice and flat, and even. The long-time, lead care-taker at the cemetery said the land is sunken in at their plot because they were most-likely buried in pine boxes. This would result in a much quicker decomposition of box and body, hence the sunken land.
No grave-markers? Possibly buried in pine-boxes? What went wrong here?
Yet another family mystery....
My husband and I priced basic granite gravestones, and we walked away with a bad case of "sticker-shock!" The prices were exorbitant! We live modestly, so at least we thought the prices folks were charging were very expensive. Dying is big business, I guess. Nonetheless, my husband and I will try to save the money to get this family the grave-markers they deserve.
In the meantime, we opted to have some temporary grave-markers created for each family member, at least this way their graves are marked. The temporary markers are nice, and sturdy too.
The care-taker at Pine Grove Cemetery, showed us exactly where to place the grave-markers. I brought flowers from my garden: white hydrangea, red zinnia, and purple anise hyssop.
William L. Young was the son of William S. Young and Elizabeth Bailey, the brother of Elizabeth M. Young Otis, and the uncle of Daniel H. Otis.

Fred H. Kriesing at Old Farm Hill Cemetery, Middletown, CT
Gravestone of Fred H. Kriesing |
It is just utterly tragic the way Fred Kriesing died, by a hit-and-run driver on Saybrook Road in Middletown.
Fred Henry Kriesing was the son of Lizzie Hannah Young and Henry F. Kriesing, the grandson of Alonzo D. Young and Jedidah Tyler, the great-grandson of Enoch C. Young and Esther Clark, the 2x great-nephew of Elizabeth M. Young Otis, and the first cousin, twice-removed, of Daniel H. Otis.

AT REST
Notice, that Fred is buried at the plot right in front of his cousin, Robert S. Otis, and family. The Otis family pillar can be seen in the right background of the photo. (Robert was the brother of Daniel Otis).
I expected his mother Lizzie, and father Henry, to be buried here as well, but there is no sign of them. However, the death record for Lizzie says that she is buried at “Farm Hill Cemetery”, and her husband, Henry, is listed on Find-a-Grave as being buried there too. I searched that cemetery a few times and could not locate either of their graves. Of note, is that Henry’s Find-a-Grave page doesn't have a photo of his gravestone either. Also, I consulted the Hale Cemetery Records (compiled 1932-1935) for Old Farm Hill, and neither Henry nor Lizzie are listed within those records. I have reached out to Augie De France (who is president of Middletown Old Burying Ground Association) and he confirmed that Lizzie Young Kriesing and her husband, Henry Kriesing, are indeed buried in "Old Farm Hill Cemetery." He cannot tell me exactly where they are buried, because there is no burial plot map for that cemetery!
This is where I think Lizzie and her husband, Henry, are buried: beside their son, Fred Kriesing at "Old Farm Hill." Fred actually has a gravestone, marking his burial site. To the right of Fred's site, is an empty patch of grass, with no grave-markers, which is just the right size for two (or more) people. I would bet my "two front teeth" that is where Lizzie and Henry are buried—with no grave-markers! This would be the third set of Young family peoples who were buried with absolutely nothing to mark their final resting place. The other two were the William L. Young family, and the Martin Dana Young family (see above, on this page, for their information).
Since there are no grave-markers for Lizzie and Henry, and therefore no epitaph, I am going to create one here for them:
